North Review: Kansas
KU Kills Itself Again
Kansas (5-3, 1-3)
Last: Lost 42-21 at Texas Tech
It was shocking to see Todd Reesing pulled in the fourth quarter against Tech. Yeah, Reesing had pretty much directly accounted for six opponent touchdowns in the last three games…but it’s still Todd Reesing. Down two touchdowns with five minutes to go is far from a hopeless situation with Todd in your corner.
Reesing has been far from spectacular, but it’s not like he’s getting a ton of help. The offensive line has been atrocious, there’s no running game, and his wide receivers are dropping balls at an alarming rate. Oh yeah, and then there have been some extremely questionable coaching decisions. Mark Mangino doesn’t want to onside or squib kick from the oppnents 40, but he’ll go for it on fourth and one, down seven, from the same position. Something doesn’t add up there.
The good news is that the defense is showing life early on in games. Unfortunately, they aren’t good enough to hold it for four quarters. They shouldn’t have to. With just a little help from the offense, KU might be 7-1 right now instead of 5-3.
Next: at K-State
There shouldn’t be any trouble getting up for this one if you’re wearing crimson and blue. It’s and in-state rival who just happens to be leading the division that was supposed to be yours before the season began. This one’s all about the offense. If the Hawks can return to normal, the Wildcats will be hard pressed to keep up. However, that’s a big “if”. One game could be a coincidence. Three in a row is a trend.
North Outlook
It’s very simple for KU. The Jayhawks need to beat K-State, Nebraska, and Missouri. If they drop one of those, it’s over…unless KU beats #2 Texas in Austin. Yeah, like I said, if they lose one of those three, it’s over. The good news is that with Colorado out of the mix, a 4-4 KU team would win any head to head tiebreaker or three way tiebreaker in the north. As amazing as it is, KU still controls its own destiny.
