I discussed the struggles of Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte in Week 7 and identified Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson and San Diego Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson as struggling first-rounders who frustrated Forte owners could target in a trade.
The RB trio must’ve taken offense, as they went off on Sunday for a combined 416 total yards and six TDs.
If only I would’ve mentioned Houston Texans RB Steve Slaton….
While Forte, Johnson and Tomlinson won’t be on the sidelines watching Garrett Wolfe, LenDale White and Darren Sproles go off for 121 yards and three TDs anytime soon, it’s best to hold expectations in check.
Of the three, Johnson has the best chance to turn things around and salvage a first-round-worthy season due to a major change in his surroundings and a schedule that features many favorable matchups.
The addition of QB Vince Young to the Titans’ starting lineup rejuvenated a Tennessee offense that combined for 26 total points in the three games prior with QB Kerry Collins under center.
How much of that rejuvenation had to do with Sunday’s opponent, the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars, remains to be seen.
There is no denying Johnson’s unlimited ceiling in future matchups against the Buffalo Bills, Texans, St. Louis Rams and Chargers who entered Week 8 rated 32nd, 23rd, 28th and 25th, respectively, against the run.
Things aren’t all rainbows and gum drops, however, as Johnson also has contests against the San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins who all rank as Top 5 run defenses.
Johnson owners face a tough dilemma this Monday, as it’s clear that the stud RBs inconsistent is likely to continue.
Is it time to swing a trade – while his value is at its highest – for a more consistent performer on a better team?
There is no clear answer, as the ultimate decision varies on a team-to-team basis.
If the plan is to keep Johnson, be sure to have two things: A strong surrounding cast that can carry your team on the bad weeks and a heart that is healthy enough to take what is sure to be an eight-week roller coaster ride.
